Electrical Safety in the Workplace (70E®)

Every year workers are injured or killed by electricity from circuits they believe are safe. The National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) is proud to announce the availability of a highly interactive online course based on NFPA 70E® standards. This course is available online at the NJATC University

This course covers the hazards of working on or near live parts using real life situations. Electricians learn how to protect themselves from arc flash and contact with live parts by simulating safe work practices. Activities include practicing safe lockout/tagout procedures by placing each action or element in order. Using NFPA 70E® charts, participants select personal protective equipment and see how their selection protects them when an accident occurs.

At the completion of this training, participants will be able to:
  • Identify the background and history of the regulations and guidelines for electrical safety in the workplace.
  • Identify the regulations that cover electrical work and the safety training requirements to protect employees.
  • Identify the types of injuries associated with electrical work.
    • approach hazards associated with electrical energy
    • approach boundaries for working near and around exposed live parts
    • arc flash and arc blast hazards associated with electrical energy
  • Identify the requirements for work permits and job briefings
  • Understand and practice safe Lockout/Tagout procedures
  • Identify the appropriate personal protective equipment necessary for electrical work. Identify the levels of clothing and personal protection required in each hazard risk category
Course Outline
  • Unit 1 Lockout/Tagout
  • Unit 2 Working On or Near Live Parts
